Making straps for shorts:

  1. Divide the front of the shorts in half visually and count 7 stitches to the left from the center. Using a contrasting color yarn, single crochet (sc) 15 stitches, chain 1, turn and sc 15 stitches. Continue in this way for 6 rows.
  2. For the 7th row, sc 2, slip stitch (sl st) 7, sc 2.
  3. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
  4. Divide the back of the shorts in half visually, count 3 stitches to the left from the center, and using a contrasting color yarn, sc 7 stitches, chain 1, turn and sc 7 stitches. Then sc 6 stitches from the second stitch, chain 1, turn and sc 6 stitches, chain 1, sc 5 stitches from the second stitch, chain 1, turn and sc 5 stitches.
  5. Do not fasten off, instead chain 25 and sc across the chain until the end. This will be the strap. Attach the strap to the back of the shorts with 2 sc, then chain 25 and repeat the process for the other strap.
  6. Sew buttons to the front of the shorts and attach the straps to the buttons.

Note: An easier way to make the straps is to crochet a chain and sew it in a V-shape to the front of the shorts, and sew it to the 22nd row for the back.
